DS Media & Events statement:

“As event organisers, we are acutely aware of how important an accurate time and distance is to all participants. Our courses are all measured by a UKA certified course measurer who also acts as one of the lead outriders to ensure the correct route is followed. There are often late changes/additions made to routes for a myriad of reasons, but all had been communicated correctly to us as organisers. It was brought to our attention during and after the event that there may be an issue with the length of the route taken by the half marathon and marathon fields.  For this reason we set up an investigation in the days following the event, involving all concerned.  It is our policy to be up front and honest with all of our participants and we have therefore shared the results of that investigation with runners today.

“Regrettably, due to incorrect placing of marshals, which we take full responsibility for, only the lead athlete (of the half marathon, Mark Hood) followed the correct route through the Sheepfold area near the Stadium of Light.  Unfortunately, the second and third placed runners were not within line of sight of the leader and lead bikes/vehicle.  This resulted in all those who followed taking an incorrect route through this section.  Our course measurer has now confirmed that 264 metres were therefore lost from the measured route.  We are sincerely sorry for any confusion and frustration that this has caused.

“We value the participation of all runners in our events beyond anything else and do our best to ensure a safe and enjoyable race for all.  The Sunderland City 10K, Marathon of the North and Half Marathon of the North are growing and developing events and, along with our partners in the city, we are convinced they will continue to grow.

“As a goodwill gesture to all those affected by the course detour we would like to offer a 25% discount from any of next year’s events.  We will contact runners again at a later date, before entries open, to advise them on how to activate this offer.

“The support that runners from near and far have given our events is greatly appreciated and we hope this will not deter them from entering in the future.”
